Our Oceans

As we begin to shift our operations towards full sustainability, we have made the decision to source our future bottles from the UK as opposed to Europe. Many drinks companies bring hundreds of thousands of tons of glass into the UK every year from overseas which equals tons of Co2 from the transportation process. By sourcing our glass from the UK, we aim to drastically reduce our production footprint.

We sustainably hand harvest all our botanicals on the Isle of Wight, with each location carefully researched and vetted to ensure no damage to the ecosystem. We ensure a maximum of 1/3rd of the top part of the plant it harvested, this allows for sufficient and sustainable regrowth.

Our seaweed is sustainably sourced in small batches in the clear waters of Wick, Scotland, allowing sufficient recovery periods in-between harvests. We source our seaweed from Wick to ensure the best quality, purest seaweed is harvested year-round, only by doing this can we create the fresh, pure taste of Barnacle Brothers Rum.

What makes us sustainable

Our promise

As we work closely with the ocean, we understand the importance of maintaining its health. We plan to offset the small amount of carbon emitted by our company by constructing an offshore seaweed farm along the south coast of England within a year following our launch.

Seaweed has been shown in studies to absorb up to 20 times more carbon per acre than land forests. Due to the rapid growth rates of some seaweed species, they also continue to absorb a considerable volume of carbon from the surroundings, whilst providing habitats for our critical marine ecosystems.

We further plan to raise awareness about plastic waste and climate change, to local communities, whilst emphasising the importance of seaweed to the marine ecosystem and its role in combatting the climate crisis.
